5. A California woman threw out the first edition Apple computer worth $200,000
One of the few original Apple I computers, made in 1976, was thrown away without understanding its worth. However, an e-waste recycling firm that recognises the value of the computer sold it at auction for $200,000. The company tracked down the woman and gave her a 50% cut as per the company’s policy. The woman, who stated that her husband had recently died and that she needed to clean up their garage, did not request a tax receipt and refused to leave her name.
6. A rubbish remover found Mayan artifacts dating back to 300 B.C.E. – 500 C.E. in New York
Artifacts worth $16,500 were found in the trash of an artist. The artist had been working on a job to clean the house and studio of a man who had lived there for five years. Someone hired Nick DiMola to clean out the studio and basement storage for $4,000. While cleaning the storage space, DiMola accidentally scraped his hand against the cardboard barrel filled with jugs and bowls from ancient Mexican artifacts from 300 B.C.E-500 C.E. The original owners could not claim ownership of them, so DiMola was free to sell them for his own profit without giving anything back
