3. North Sentinel Island, India
North Sentinel Island is located in the Andaman and Nicobar archipelago of India. Home to one of the world’s last uncontacted tribes, known as the Sentinelese. The Sentinelese have chosen to remain isolated from the outside world, fiercely rejecting any attempts at contact. The island is considered highly dangerous for outsiders due to the tribe’s hostility and reluctance to interact with outsiders.

As a result of the Sentinelese’s rejection of contact, further restrictions have been put in place to protect both the tribe and outsiders. The Indian government has established a 3-mile (5-kilometer) exclusion zone around the island, making it illegal for anyone to venture close to its shores without official permission. This is done to respect the Sentinelese’s wish for isolation and to ensure their safety and well-being.
Survival after Tsunami
During the devastating tsunami that struck the Indian Ocean in 2004, concerns were raised about the well-being of the Sentinelese. The island’s remote location and limited information about the tribe made it challenging to assess the impact of the natural disaster on their community. However, subsequent aerial surveys indicated that the Sentinelese had survived the tsunami and continued to inhabit their island. The event served as a reminder of their resilience and the need to respect their isolation.
